Gerhard Gunter (Gerry) Willner

Gerhard (Gerry) Willner was born in Breslau, Germany in 1923. His parents were Gertrud and Kurt Willner. He began life at a time when cars were a rare sight and electricity was only available at the hospital. Gerhard had many brothers and sisters: Erwin, Frida, Edith, Kurt-Heinz, Ursula, Inge, Klaus and Günter. As a young man he was recruited into the German army and shortly after going to war was captured and sent to a POW prison labour camp in Belgium to work in the coal mines. Working in the dust of the coal mines was the principle reason that caused him to lose one of his lungs to a disease called silicosis in 1986.

In 1949 he married Emma Scholz. In 1957 Gerry made the decision to begin a new life in Canada with his young family. Together with his younger brother Klaus and his family, they crossed the Atlantic on the S.S. Acadia in February of that same year. Gerhard and Emma were the parents of three children, Klaus, Achim and Barbara. In 1966, Emma died of cancer and Gerhard was left alone to raise the children. He was a hard working man who worked long hours to provide for his family.

Gerhard loved to travel and took many vacations down south. He is remembered for his great sense of humour, he was able to take almost any situation and find the fun in it. Gerry also loved music and could ‘cut the rug’ like no other. Cooking was another specialty of his, and anyone who was fortunate enough to taste a ‘Gerry Burger’ will certainly miss them. His hobbies included painting both still life and landscapes, wood working and he made many pieces of furniture for anyone that needed something.

His four grandchildren, Eric, James, Emma and Rebecca were the apples of his eye. He never forgot their birthdays and was always around for special occasions, whether it was a baseball game, ballet recital or special school event.

For the past 29 years he has been the loving companion of Marlies and has come to know her children Ralf, Mike, Jennifer and Sharon with grandson Tyler as well. Together Marlies and Gerhard shared many laughs some travel and some homes in Richmond Hill, Barrie and Wasaga Beach.

His kindness, humour, and loving ways will not be forgotten.

Peacefully at Collingwood General & Marine Hospital on June 1st, 2006 in his 83rd year.

Loving father of Klaus ( Patti),  Barbara (Paul) and fondly remembered by long time companion Marlies.
Predeceased by his wife Emma (1966 ) and one son Achim (2000)
Dear Opa of Eric, James, Emma, and Rebecca.
Dear brother of Erwin, Frida, Edith, Kurt-Heinz, Ursula, Inge, Klaus and Gunter.
